Plain-English summary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Associated Merchandising (AMC) are recalling a set of 20 soft foam bath blocks. The blocks, which come in various shapes and colors and stick together when wet, were sold at retail for approximately $10.00. The product is labeled for ages 6 months to adult, with item number #5768 on the box.

The recall is due to a potential danger where small children might bite off pieces of the dense foam material large enough to lodge in their throats, causing choking or suffocation. To date, the CPSC reports that these products are not known to have caused any such injuries. An estimated 19,000 sets were distributed nationwide beginning in August 1985.

Consumers should remove the products from use immediately and return them to the retailer where purchased for a refund of the purchase price and postage or transportation costs. The blocks were sold at various department stores across the United States and in Toronto, Canada, including Daytons, Hudsons, Brandeis, Abraham and Strauss, Godchaux, Liberty House, Foley's, Burdines, Rich's, Woodward and Lothrop, Higbee's, Bloomingdales, Boston Store, Sanger Harris, Bullock's, Lazarus, Shillito Rikes, and Hudson Bay Company.
