Kinderkids Inflatable Playrings Recalled for Infant Suffocation Risk
CPSC recalls about 18,000 inflatable playrings because the soft surface can cover a baby's nose and mouth, restricting airflow.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a significant injury report (infant gasping for air) and a known risk of fatal suffocation, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and KinderkidsTM are recalling approximately 18,000 inflatable playrings for babies. The product, which resembles a pool float and measures 40 inches in diameter, features a yellow plastic inner tube with a multicolor cloth covering. It was sold at Walmart stores and by the mail-order company One Step Ahead from July 1998 through April 2000 for between $20 and $35. The playrings were manufactured in China.
The recall is due to a suffocation hazard. When a baby leans their face against the side of the playring, the soft surface can cover the baby's nose and mouth, restricting airflow. CPSC has received one report of a 6-month-old baby found gasping for air after falling asleep face down in the playring; the baby was removed without injury. CPSC notes that infant suffocation deaths can occur when airflow is restricted by contact with soft surfaces.
Consumers should stop using the playrings immediately and discard or destroy the products. Because the manufacturer is out of business, a refund is no longer available. Consumers with questions can call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054).
