Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the destruction of approximately 110 Baby Desire baby cribs that were seized by the U.S. Marshals in Brooklyn, New York, under a court order. These cribs, imported from Italy, were offered for sale at the Baby Desire retail store in Brooklyn between January 1984 and January 1985. The store is no longer in business.
The cribs were destroyed because they failed to meet CPSC safety requirements for full-size and non-full-size cribs and could not be brought into compliance. Specifically, the vertical slats were spaced too far apart, allowing an infant's body to slide between them and become entrapped by the head, which could cause strangulation. Additionally, the sides of the cribs were not high enough to discourage toddlers from climbing out. The cribs also lacked required assembly instructions and labeling.
The CPSC estimates that 47 of these unsafe cribs were sold to consumers. Because the cribs lack identifying labeling, consumers who believe they may have purchased one should measure the spaces between the vertical slats. If the spaces are greater than 2 3/8 inches, the crib is unsafe. Consumers can contact the CPSC's New York Regional Office at 212-264-1125 or the toll-free Hotline at 800-638-CPSC for more information.
