Murray Ohio Recalls BMX Bicycle Handlebar Stem Assemblies Due to Separation Risk

Plain-English summary

Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company is conducting a voluntary replacement program for bicycle handlebar stem assemblies on approximately 62,300 BMX bicycles. The affected units were manufactured from August 1982 through May 1983. The recall addresses a random stem weld problem that may permit the stems to separate from the handlebars, allowing the handlebars to fall off the bicycle.

The company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have been informed of approximately 48 incidents where handlebars became loose or separated. There have been 17 reports of injuries to riders due to falls possibly associated with the problem stems. Murray Ohio redesigned the handlebar stem assembly beginning in May 1983 to eliminate the issue.

Consumers can identify affected units by the model number stamped on the front of the frame and the production date on the identification decal above the pedal crank, which ranges from 08-82 through 12-82 and 01 through 05-83. Customers who have not already had their bicycles repaired should contact the nearest Murray Ohio Service Center to have a replacement stem installed free of charge.
