DeWALT Battery Walk-Behind Mowers Recalled for Laceration Hazard
Stanley Black & Decker is recalling about 46,200 DeWALT Battery walk-behind mowers because water entering the handle support can cause the mower to fail to shut off or start without a key, posing a laceration risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Although one finger laceration was reported, it did not require medical attention, and no hospitalizations or systemic injury pattern has been documented. The hazard involves risk-of-harm equipment (powered mower with uncontrolled blade), and the laceration is directly tied to the defect mechanism, placing this at High severity per the risk-of-harm criterion.
Plain-English summary
Stanley Black & Decker Inc. is recalling approximately 46,200 units of 2024 model year DeWALT Battery 21" Push walk-behind mowers (models DCMWP234U2 and DCMWP600X2) and DeWALT Battery 21" Self-Propelled walk-behind mowers (models DCMWSP256U2 and DCMWSP650Y2). These mowers are black, gray, and yellow with yellow DeWALT branding on the front or side.
The recalled mowers were sold at The Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware, and various retailers nationwide and online from January 2024 through July 2024 for between $530 and $750. Only mowers with date codes from 2023 32-58 through 2024 13-58 are affected; those manufactured after March 2024 are not included in the recall.
If water gets into the mower's handle support while the battery is installed, the mower can fail to shut off when the bail handle is released or start without a key. The firm has received 10 reports of mowers failing to shut off when the bail handle was released and one report of a mower starting without a key inserted. One incident resulted in a finger laceration that required no medical attention.
Consumers who own affected mowers and whose mowers have gotten wet should immediately stop using them and contact DeWALT at 800-990-6421 (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday) or visit https://www.dewalt.com/push-mowers-recall to receive a free repair at an authorized service center.
