Pool and Spa Drain Covers Recalled for Entrapment Hazard

Goetas pool and spa drain covers do not meet the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act standards, creating an entrapment hazard for swimmers and bathers. About 300 units were sold on Amazon from October 2021 through April 2022.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product designed to prevent a serious hazard (entrapment in pools/spas), where no injuries have been reported. Under the rubric, products where injury has not yet been reported but create a significant risk score 3 (High).

Plain-English summary

Goetas, a Chinese manufacturer, imported replacement round pool main drain covers with two screws that do not conform to the entrapment protection standards of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA). The recalled drain covers—white ABS plastic covers 7.20 inches in diameter on top and 8.14 inches on the bottom—pose an entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers.

About 300 units were sold exclusively on Amazon.com between October 2021 and April 2022 for approximately $10 each. The covers are marked with "Listed suction fitting," "SP-1058-B," and "88D9 148 GPM" on the center grate.

Consumers should immediately stop using pools and spas with these drain covers. Pool owners and operators must remove the drain cover and submit a photo to Goetas at [email protected] as proof of removal to receive a full refund. The covers should be disposed of after proof of removal is submitted. Goetas is contacting all purchasers directly.
