STIHL PolyCut Mowing Heads Recalled Due to Injury Hazard

STIHL is recalling about 73,000 PolyCut mowing heads because loose bolts can cause the unit to come apart, posing an injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (two reports), but no fatalities or severe injuries are explicitly detailed, fitting the 'High' criteria for injury risk without critical severity.

Plain-English summary

STIHL Incorporated is recalling approximately 73,000 STIHL PolyCut mowing heads, models 27-3 and 47-3. These cutting attachments are compatible with certain STIHL trimmers, brushcutters, and clearing saws. The mowing heads feature three orange plastic blades, a black top housing, and a white bottom housing, with the model number located on the original packaging and molded on the top side of the device.

The recall is due to a hazard where the bolts connecting the plastic blades and holding the mowing head together can come loose. This can cause the mowing head to come apart, posing a risk of injury to the user or bystanders. STIHL has received 28 reports of loose bolts or mowing heads coming apart, including two reports of injuries.

The affected products were sold nationwide at authorized full-line STIHL servicing dealers from July 2018 through July 2019 for approximately $30 for the 27-3 model and $40 for the 47-3 model. Consumers should stop using the recalled mowing heads immediately and take them to an authorized STIHL dealer for a full refund. For more information, consumers can contact STIHL Inc. at 800-610-6677 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.stihlusa.com.
