What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (transmission gear breakage) that poses crash and injury hazards, but the source explicitly states that no injuries have been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
American Honda Motor Company Inc. is recalling approximately 5,700 model year 2015 and 2016 Honda CRF450R motocross off-road motorcycles. The recall involves motorcycles with 450cc, 4-cycle engines that are red, black, and white with "Honda" and "CRF450R" printed on both sides. The model year is printed on a label at the front right top of the frame, and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is stamped on a nameplate in the frame at the front right, near the steering head. Affected VINs for the 2015 model end in 7FK400015 through 6FK403360, and for the 2016 model end in 36GK500009 through 1GK502993.
The recall is being conducted because the transmission gear can break, which poses crash and injury hazards. No injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
The motorcycles were sold nationwide through authorized Honda Powersports dealers from September 2014 through August 2017 for about $8,700. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled motorcycles and contact an authorized Honda Powersports dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair. Honda is also contacting all known purchasers directly. For more information, consumers can call American Honda toll-free at 866-784-1870 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or visit the Honda Powersports website.
