Carrier Corporation is recalling approximately 23,300 Carrier Greenspeed and Bryant Evolution Extreme heat pump units in the United States, with an additional 2,000 units sold in Canada. The affected units are 2, 3, 4, and 5-ton models used for heating and cooling homes. Specific model numbers include Carrier 25VNA024, 25VNA036, 25VNA048, and 25VNA060, and Bryant 280ANV024, 280ANV036, 280ANV048, and 280ANV060. These units were sold at Sears stores and HVAC dealers nationwide between June 2011 and August 2016 for prices ranging from $12,000 to $18,000.
The recall is due to a fire hazard. The capacitors in the fuse boards of these heat pumps can stop working, which causes the unit to overheat. Carrier has received 41 reports of the heat pumps overheating, but no injuries, fires, or property damage have been reported.
