Toshiba America Information Systems is expanding a recall of Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs used in 41 models of Toshiba Satellite laptops. The recall involves approximately 83,000 additional battery packs sold between June 2011 and November 2016, in addition to the 91,000 units recalled in March 2016. The affected battery packs have part numbers beginning with G71C.
The recall was issued because the lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, posing burn and fire hazards to consumers. The firm has received five reports of the battery pack overheating and melting, including one report since the initial recall announcement. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately visit the firm's website to check if their battery pack is affected using the battery pack utility or by manually checking the model, part, and serial numbers. If the battery is part of the recall, consumers should power off the laptop, remove the battery, and follow instructions to obtain a free replacement. Until a replacement is received, consumers should use the laptop by plugging into AC power only.
