Plain-English summary
Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. is recalling Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs installed in 39 models of Toshiba Portege, Satellite, and Tecra laptops. The recall involves approximately 91,000 units sold in the United States and 10,000 units sold in Canada. These battery packs were sold separately, installed by Toshiba as part of a repair, or included with laptops purchased from retailers such as Office Depot, Staples, and online stores between June 2011 and January 2016. The affected battery packs have part numbers beginning with G71C.
The lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, posing burn and fire hazards to consumers. The firm has received four reports of the battery packs overheating and melting, but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately visit the firm's website to check if their battery pack is part of the recall using the battery pack utility link or by manually checking the model, part, and serial numbers. If the battery is affected, consumers should power off the laptop, remove the battery, and follow instructions to obtain a free replacement battery pack.
