Sony Electronics is recalling Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs used in 18 models of Sony VAIO Series laptop computers. The recall involves battery packs with model number VGP-BPS26 and part numbers 1-853-237-11 and 1-853-237-21. These battery packs were installed in laptops sold between February 2013 and October 2013, as well as sold separately for repairs. The recall covers approximately 1,700 units in the United States and 21 units in Canada.
The lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, which poses a risk of burns and fire. No injuries or property damage have been reported in connection with this recall. The battery packs were manufactured by SANYO ENERGY (Suzhou) CO, Ltd. of China, a Panasonic subsidiary.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled battery packs, power off the laptop, and remove the battery. They should contact Sony Electronics to obtain a free replacement. Until a replacement is received, consumers can use the laptop by plugging in the AC power only.
