Rixson, a brand of Yale Security Inc. owned by Assa Abloy, is recalling approximately 130 Exterior Gate Closers Model 1350. The affected units were manufactured by Assa Abloy Italia S.p.a. in Italy and produced between January 2014 and December 2015. These gate closers are affixed to external gates and feature a body approximately 6.5 inches long with a sliding arm about 3 feet wide when extended. The units are marked on the side of the body with "MAB/ASSA ABLOY," and the production date is stamped in a "week/year" format on the side of the body, accessible by removing the plastic housing.
The recall is due to a hazard where the gate closer mechanism can break and eject metal pieces, including the spring, or spray oil, posing a risk of injury. The firm has received 15 reports worldwide of mechanisms breaking and ejecting metal objects, including three in the U.S., but no injuries have been reported.
The recalled gate closers were sold through wholesale and hardware distributors from April 2015 through November 2015 for about $460. Consumers should immediately stop using the gate and contact Rixson for information on safely removing the arm from the gate closer and returning it for a free replacement. Rixson is also contacting consumers who bought the recalled product directly.
