Black Diamond Equipment Ltd. is recalling approximately 2,800 Index Ascenders used for rock climbing and mountaineering. The recall includes left and right versions of the metal ascenders, which are orange or silver with black and gray grips. The manufacturing code for affected units ranges from 4356 to 6015 and is located on the frame of the ascenders.
The recall is due to a defect where the rivet holding the toothed cam can release. If this occurs, the ascender may slide on the rope or become detached, posing a risk of injury or death to climbers from a fall. No injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
The affected ascenders were sold nationwide and online at Eastern Mountain Sports, Moosejaw Mountaineering, Outdoors Inc., REI, Sport Chalet, Backcountry.com, and BlackDiamond.com for about $80. An additional 300 units were sold in Canada. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ascenders and contact Black Diamond for instructions on inspecting and returning the product for a free replacement. Only ascenders with an unformed rivet need to be returned.
