BD Recon LT Avalanche Transceivers Recalled Due to Switch Corrosion
BD Recon LT avalanche transceivers are recalled because the switch mechanism can corrode and fail, potentially preventing rescuers from locating avalanche victims. Six devices have malfunctioned; no injuries reported.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported. The device failure could result in serious injury or death during avalanche rescue operations, but the source explicitly states no injuries have been reported and the hazard remains theoretical in terms of actual harm.
Plain-English summary
Black Diamond Equipment is recalling about 1,660 BD Recon LT avalanche transceivers sold in the United States (plus about 206 in Canada). The transceivers are handheld communication devices used for avalanche rescue operations. They are plastic with an LCD screen, gray exterior, and blue top.
The metal contact in the switch mechanism can corrode and cause the transceiver to malfunction. If the device fails, it can turn off and make it impossible to locate a victim in an avalanche. The manufacturer has received six reports of the switch mechanism malfunctioning due to corrosion, though no injuries have been reported to date.
The affected transceivers were sold as standalone units and as part of Black Diamond Alpine Avy Safety Sets and Black Diamond Recon LT Avy Safety Sets. They were sold from May 2021 through February 2025 for between $350 and $500 at Liberty Mountain, Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), specialty outdoor stores nationwide, and online at blackdiamondequipment.com, backcountry.com, and evo.com.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled transceivers and contact Black Diamond for a full refund, replacement transceiver, or free repair.
