Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fall hazard) where injuries have been reported (bumps, bruises, lacerations, concussion, broken finger), but no deaths or serious injuries requiring hospitalization are explicitly stated, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products with reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Rainbow Play Systems is reannouncing a recall of plastic yellow trapeze rings manufactured by Nylacarb Corporation. The rings are triangular with rounded sides and a loop at the top, measuring approximately 8.5 inches high by 6.5 inches wide. They were sold as a pair connected to a trapeze bar, either as a separate component or attached to specific Rainbow-branded residential wooden playsets, including the All-American, Backyard Circus, Carnival, Fiesta, King Kong, Monster, Sunray, Sunshine, and Rainbow models. The playsets feature an aluminum plate on the front of the wooden swing beam stamped with "Playgrounds America," "Rainbow Play Systems Inc.," or "Sunray Premium Playgrounds."
The recall is due to the risk that the rings can unexpectedly crack or break during use, which poses a fall hazard to children. Rainbow has received more than 100 reports of the rings cracking or breaking, including 15 reports of injuries consisting of bumps, bruises, lacerations, a concussion, and one broken finger.
Approximately 121,000 pairs of rings were sold in the United States, with additional sales in Canada and Mexico. The rings were sold through Rainbow dealers nationwide from January 2007 through December 2011, and at mass merchandisers including Sam's Club, Toys R Us, and Walmart from January 2009 through December 2009. The playsets retailed for between $900 and $10,000.
Consumers should immediately stop children from using the recalled rings. They should contact Rainbow Play Systems for ring removal instructions, remove the rings from the playset, and receive a $10 gift card. Consumers can reach Rainbow toll-free at 888-201-1570 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit www.rainbowplay.com and click on the Recall tab.
