SRAM Recalls Zipp 88 Bicycle Wheel Hubs Due to Crash and Injury Hazards

SRAM is recalling approximately 12,000 Zipp 88 aluminum hubs for bicycle wheels. The recall involves the first version of the 88 hub, which is identifiable by the Z logo on the flange ring. The aluminum hub shell is silver, and the outside flange ring is gray aluminum in the standard option or blue, gold, gray, pink, or red in the ZedTech options. The diameter of the two clinch nuts is approximately 1 inch. Other versions of the hub, which do not have the Z logo on the flange ring, are not affected by this recall.

The recall is being issued because the hub flange ring on the front hub can fail, posing a crash and injury hazard. The company reports two incidents of collapsed front wheels. Both incidents resulted in stitches, bruises, and lacerations, with one case also involving a concussion.

The affected hubs were sold between October 2008 and December 2010 at specialty bicycle retailers nationwide. They were sold as front hubs for about $215, as front wheels for about $920, as front and rear wheel sets for about $2,300, and as part of bicycles for about $5,000 to $12,000. The hubs were included in specific models from Specialized, Giant, Felt, Orbea, and Cannondale.

Consumers should immediately stop using bicycles equipped with the recalled Zipp 88 front hub. They should contact SRAM at (800) 346-2928 between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Friday, or visit www.sram.com or www.zipp.com and click on Recall Notice for more information. SRAM will provide a free replacement hub.
