Plain-English summary
Mavic USA is recalling approximately 12,000 R-SYS and R-SYS Premium front wheel rims for bicycles. These rims were manufactured by Salomon SAS of France and sold as original equipment on various bicycle brands or separately as front wheels for road bikes. The rims feature 16 tubular, unidirectional carbon spokes and are 22mm in diameter, with "R-SYS" printed on the front rim.
The recall is due to a hazard where the spokes on the front wheel rim can break during use, which poses a fall and crash hazard to riders. Mavic USA has received one report of an injury involving broken teeth associated with the product.
The recalled rims were sold at specialty bicycle retailers from May 2007 through December 2008. When sold separately from the bicycle, the front wheel of the two-wheel set cost between $700 and $750. Consumers should stop using the recalled front wheel rims and contact their bicycle retailer for a free replacement front rim. For additional information, consumers can contact Mavic USA at (800) 664-9228 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.mavic.com.
