Salomon and Atomic Alpine Ski Bindings Recalled for Unexpected Release Hazard

Salomon USA is recalling specific Salomon and Atomic alpine ski bindings because the toe component may fail to secure the boot, causing unexpected release and falls.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in ski bindings that resulted in reported injuries, including a broken leg and a knee injury, which meets the criteria for a Severe rating (significant injury reports).

Plain-English summary

Salomon USA is recalling approximately 10,000 units of Salomon and Atomic alpine ski bindings due to a safety hazard. The recall involves Salomon models LZ 7, LZ 8, LZ 9, LZ 7 SR, LZ 8 SR, LZ 8 SC, and J LZ 9, as well as Atomic models Evox 2.8, Evox 2.8+, Evox 2.8++, and FFG 8. The affected bindings feature a toe component with a production date code ending in "8" located on the center plate.

The hazard exists because the toe component of the ski bindings could fail to fully secure the ski boot to the binding. This failure can cause the binding to release unexpectedly, potentially leading the skier to lose control or fall and suffer injuries. The firm has received two reports of injuries associated with this defect, including a broken leg and a knee injury.

These ski bindings were sold nationwide at authorized Salomon USA and Atomic USA ski dealers from September 2008 through October 2009 for between $90 and $160. Consumers should stop using these ski bindings immediately. To resolve the issue, consumers should return Salomon-brand bindings to any authorized Salomon ski dealer or Atomic-brand bindings to any authorized Atomic ski dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the toe component. For additional information, consumers can contact the firm toll-free at (877) 789-5111 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, email [email protected], or visit www.salomon.com or www.atomicsnow.com.
