The GunBox LLC is recalling about 1,000 gun storage boxes because the locking mechanism can open if dropped, allowing access to the gun inside.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (firearm storage) where the locking mechanism failure could lead to unauthorized access to a gun, but no injuries have been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
The GunBox LLC is recalling approximately 1,000 The GunBox™ Gun Storage Boxes. The recall includes version 01 of The GunBox™ RF (model GBRF1.0), RF+Biometric (Model GBBIO1.0), and the Premier (model GBPREM1.0). These aluminum, square, clam-shaped cases were sold online at www.thegunbox.com from January 2014 through February 2014 for between $280 and $475.
The recall is being issued because the locking mechanism on the storage boxes can open if the box is dropped. This failure allows unauthorized access to the gun stored inside the case. No injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
Consumers should contact The GunBox LLC toll-free at (866) 764-0009 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, or visit www.thegunbox.com and click on "Update Now Available for Version 1 of the Gunbox" for instructions on returning the box for a free replacement locking mechanism.
