What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury (skin irritation and blistering) has been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for products with reported harm but no fatalities or severe systemic injuries.
Plain-English summary
Fitbit Inc. is recalling approximately 1,000,000 Fitbit Force wireless activity-tracking wristbands in the United States and about 28,000 in Canada. The recall involves model numbers FB402BK, FB402BKS, FB402SL, and FB402SLS. These wristbands function as pedometers, sleep monitors, and watches, featuring a plastic body with a stainless steel casing and clasp.
The recall was issued because users can develop allergic reactions to the stainless steel casing, strap materials, or adhesives used in assembly. These reactions can result in redness, rashes, or blistering where the skin has been in contact with the tracker. Fitbit has received about 9,900 reports of skin irritation and about 250 reports of blistering.
The wristbands were sold at AT&T, Best Buy, Brookstone, Dick's Sporting Goods, Radio Shack, REI, Sports Authority, Target, and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com and Fitbit.com, from October 2013 to February 2014 for about $130. Consumers should contact Fitbit for a full refund.
