Doodlebutt is recalling approximately 1,500 units of Jelly BeadZ Jumbo BeadZ and Magic Growing Fruity Fun water-absorbing polymer toys. These products, which can absorb 300 to 500 times their weight in water and grow up to eight times their original size, were sold at Amazon.com from February 2012 through September 2013 for about $9. The toys are made in China.

The recall is due to a serious ingestion hazard. The soft, colorful toys can be mistaken by children for candy. If swallowed, the polymer balls can expand inside a child's body, causing intestinal obstructions, severe discomfort, vomiting, and dehydration, which could be life-threatening. Similar toys have not shown up on x-rays and required surgery for removal. While no injuries have been reported for these specific products, CPSC is aware of one incident involving a similar product where an 8-month-old girl required surgery, and two cases outside the U.S. including one death.
