These kits are designed to make standard U.S. and Canadian appliances usable abroad by converting 220-volt AC electricity to 110-volt AC. The kits include a black converter with a red switch to adjust wattage from 50 to 1600 watts, along with various adapter plugs.
The recall is being issued because the converter can overheat if a load in excess of 50 watts is applied while the device is in the 50-watt setting. This overheating poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers. No injuries have been reported in the United States.
The affected products were sold at retail stores nationwide and through the Samsonite online store from January 2011 through December 2012 for approximately $35. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled travel converters and contact Samsonite to return the product for a full refund.
