Fisher-Price Recalls Rock 'n Play Infant Sleepers Due to Mold Risk
Fisher-Price is recalling about 800,000 Rock 'n Play infant sleepers because mold can develop between the cushion and frame, posing a respiratory risk to infants.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (infant sleeper) with reported injuries (respiratory issues, coughs, hives) but no reported deaths or hospitalizations, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for injury reports without critical outcomes.
Plain-English summary
Fisher-Price Inc. is recalling approximately 800,000 units of the Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleeper infant recliner seats. The recall is issued because mold can develop between the removable seat cushion and the hard plastic frame if the product remains wet or is infrequently cleaned. This mold growth poses a risk of exposure to infants sleeping in the product, which the CPSC notes has been associated with respiratory illnesses and other infections.
The affected product is designed for babies up to 25 pounds and consists of a soft plastic seat held by a metal rocking frame with a removable fabric cover. Fisher-Price has received 600 reports of mold on the product, and sixteen consumers have reported that their infants were treated for respiratory issues, coughs, and hives after sleeping in the sleeper. The units were sold at mass merchandise stores nationwide and online since September 2009 for between $50 and $85.
Consumers should immediately check for mold under the removable seat cushion, looking for dark brown, gray, or black spots. If mold is found, consumers should immediately stop using the product. Fisher-Price can provide cleaning instructions or further assistance by contacting the firm at (800) 432-5437 or visiting www.service.mattel.com.
