Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly reports one child death resulting from strangulation, which meets the rubric criteria for a Critical severity score of 5.
Plain-English summary
Peg Perego USA Inc. is recalling approximately 6,223,000 Venezia and Pliko-P3 strollers manufactured between January 2004 and September 2007. The recall involves specific older versions of these strollers that feature a child tray with one cup holder. Strollers equipped with a bumper bar or a tray with two cup holders are not included in this recall. The affected models are identified by specific model numbers printed on a white label on the back of the Pliko-P3 seat or on the Venezia footboard.
The hazard exists because an infant who is not harnessed can pass through the opening between the stroller tray and the seat bottom, allowing their head and neck to become entrapped by the tray. This entrapment creates a risk of strangulation, particularly for infants younger than 12 months of age. The CPSC reports one death and one near-strangulation incident associated with this defect. A 6-month-old boy in California died of strangulation in 2004 after his head was trapped between the seat and tray. In 2006, a 7-month-old girl in New York nearly strangled under similar circumstances.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Peg Perego for a free repair kit. The strollers were sold at various retailers nationwide, including Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby, from January 2004 through September 2010. Consumers should not return the strollers to retailers, as they are unable to provide the repair kit.
