Plain-English summary
Briggs & Stratton Corporation is recalling approximately 50 Model 40 V-Twin engines. These engines were installed in specific riding mowers sold under the Craftsman, Husqvarna, and Bad Boy brands. The affected mowers were sold in February and March 2010 for between $1,500 and $3,500.
The recall is due to a hazard where wear on misrouted wiring may cause it to disconnect from the shut-off device. This failure allows the engine to continue running when the key is in the "OFF" position or when the operator leaves the seat while the mower is engaged, posing an injury hazard to consumers. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately stop using the affected riding mowers and contact a Briggs & Stratton Authorized Dealer for a free inspection and repair. Owners of affected Craftsman and Husqvarna models were notified by letter from Sears and Briggs & Stratton. Tractor Supply Company has not notified purchasers of the affected Bad Boy models. The engine date code is 100201Y, located on the valve cover at the front of the engine near the oil dipstick.
