Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has re-announced a recall for approximately 985,000 Delta Enterprise "Safety Peg" Drop-Side Cribs. This action follows the discovery of a second infant death associated with the product. The recall covers 49 specific crib models manufactured by Delta Enterprise Corp. of New York, N.Y., and sold at major retail stores including Kmart, Target, and Walmart between January 1995 and December 2005 (through September 2007 for model 4624).
The hazard involves missing safety pegs on the drop-side legs, which can allow the drop-side rail to disengage from the track. This creates a hazardous space where an infant can become entrapped and suffocate. In January 2011, CPSC and Delta learned of a 2009 death in which a 7-month-old girl from Colorado Springs, Colo., became entrapped and suffocated between the detached drop-side and the mattress of her recalled crib. The crib had been purchased secondhand and re-assembled without the safety pegs in the bottom tracks.
CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using any crib that is missing a safety peg on either leg of the drop side. Consumers should contact Delta toll-free at (800) 816-5304 or visit www.cribrecallcenter.com to receive a free, easy-to-install repair kit. Parents are encouraged to find a safe, alternative sleep environment for their child until the repair kit, which includes new safety pegs, is safely installed.
