What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with three reported overheating incidents but no reported injuries, fitting the rubric criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Niles Audio Corp. is recalling approximately 3,800 Niles ZR-6 MultiZone Receivers due to a fire hazard. The receivers are black with a blue LCD display on the right side and the Niles logo in white on the front center. They measure 17 inches wide by 3.5 inches high by 15 inches deep, and the model number ZR-6 is located on the lower left side of the front panel.

A failure in the receiver's internal components can cause connected loudspeakers to overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers. The firm has received reports of three incidents of connected loudspeakers overheating, but no injuries have been reported.

The recalled receivers were sold nationwide from July 2008 through November 2009 by audio/video/home theater custom installation professionals for about $2,000. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled receivers and contact Niles for a free repair kit, which includes a software update. Niles is directly contacting consumers who purchased the recalled receivers.
