Graco Drop Side Cribs Recalled for Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

LaJobi Inc. is recalling approximately 217,000 Graco-branded drop side cribs manufactured in China and Vietnam. The affected full-size wood cribs were sold in cherry, espresso, natural, and white finishes between February 2007 and March 2010 for between $140 and $200 at children's product stores and other retailers nationwide. Specific affected models include the Ashleigh, Hampton, Jason, Kendal, Lauren, Rachel, Sarah, Shannon, and Tifton drop side cribs.
The recall is due to a hazard where the drop side hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When this occurs, a hazardous gap is created between the drop side and the mattress, posing a risk of suffocation and strangulation if an infant or toddler becomes wedged. Additionally, children can fall from the cribs when the drop side detaches or fails to lock. CPSC and LaJobi have received 99 reports of drop side incidents, including two instances of entrapment (both children were freed by caregivers) and six reports of falls, including one mild concussion.
