West Elm is recalling approximately 42,000 Jute/Poly Roman shades in all sizes and colors. These shades were sold exclusively through the West Elm catalog and website from January 2005 through August 2009 for between $30 and $40. The shades feature an orange, black, and white label at the bottom edge warning that cords and bead chains can loop around a child's neck and strangle.
The recall is prompted by the risk of strangulation. This hazard can occur when a child places their neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the shade, or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around their neck. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that no injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Roman shades. They should contact West Elm toll-free at (800) 492-1949 or visit www.westelm.com to arrange for free pick-up of the shade. Once the shade is received by the firm, a merchandise card in the value of the purchase will be issued.
