What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fall hazard) with reported minor injuries (cuts and bruises) but no reports of serious injury or death, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for injury risk without severe outcomes.
Plain-English summary
Electra Bicycle Co. is expanding a recall of approximately 6,400 2009 model bicycles equipped with front-mounted trays or baskets. The affected models include the Delivery 3i, Delivery 8D, Holiday 3i, Holiday 8i, and Surf 3i. The trays feature an alloy frame with wooden slats, while the baskets are wicker with a removable tote bag. These items were sold as original equipment on the bicycles or as aftermarket accessories.
The recall is being issued because the front tray or basket can come loose and contact the front tire, posing a fall hazard to riders. Electra Bicycle Co. has received 15 reports of the tray or basket coming loose, including two reports of minor cuts and bruises. The bicycles were sold nationwide through authorized Electra Bicycle dealers from October 2008 through August 2009 for between $600 and $750, with aftermarket trays and baskets costing about $100.
Consumers should immediately stop riding these bicycles and contact an Electra Bicycle dealer for a free inspection and repair of the trays that came as original equipment, or a refund for trays and baskets purchased as aftermarket items. For additional information, consumers can contact Electra Bicycle at (800) 261-1644 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit www.electrabike.com.
