Electra E-Bikes Recalled Due to Crash Hazard From Loose Rear Fender
Trek is recalling about 927 Electra e-bikes because the rear fender can come loose, contact the rear wheel, and stop the bike unexpectedly, posing a crash hazard. One injury with a fractured shinbone and meniscus tear has been reported.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: One rider sustained a fractured shinbone and meniscus tear, qualifying as a significant injury. The mechanical defect in the rear fender assembly meets the rubric criterion for structural defect with injury reports.
Plain-English summary
Trek Bicycle Corporation is recalling approximately 927 Electra Navigator Go! (model years 2021 and 2022) and Electra Ace of Spades Go! (model years 2018, 2021, and 2022) e-bikes. The rear fender on these e-bikes can come loose and make contact with the rear wheel, causing the bike to stop unexpectedly. This can cause the rider to lose control of the bike, posing a crash hazard.
The recalled e-bikes were sold nationwide and online through Trek-owned bicycle stores, independent bicycle stores, and at www.electra.trekbikes.com from June 2018 through August 2023 for approximately $3,000 each. Trek has received two reports of the rear fender coming loose and making contact with the rear wheel, including one report involving a rider who sustained a fractured shinbone, a meniscus tear, and scrapes.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled e-bikes and contact an authorized Trek or Electra retailer to receive a free repair to replace the rear fender bolts. Trek is contacting all known purchasers directly. For additional information, consumers can contact Trek at 800-373-4594 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit www.trekbikes.com.
