SRAM is recalling 10-speed bicycle chains and PowerLock connector links because the brittle links can crack and cause the chain to separate, posing a fall hazard.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fall hazard) where injury has not yet been reported, which corresponds to a High severity score of 3 according to the rubric.

Plain-English summary

SRAM LLC is recalling approximately 24,000 10-speed bicycle chains equipped with PowerLock connector links, as well as the individual connector links sold separately. The recall also includes some complete bicycles from brands such as Guru, Surly, Salsa, BMC, Serotta, Seven, and Ridley that were installed with the affected chains.

The recalled PowerLock connector links are brittle and can crack, which allows the bicycle chain to separate from the bike. This defect poses a fall hazard to the rider. The affected links are identified by a date code of M or N on the side of the connector. The specific chain model numbers involved are PC-1030, PC-1050, PC-1070, PC-1090, and PC-1090R.

The individual connectors and chains were sold at specialty bicycle retailer stores nationwide from January 2009 through August 2009. Bicycles with the affected chains were sold from April 2009 through August 2009. SRAM has reported one incident in the United States and three outside the U.S., but no injuries have been reported.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled PowerLock connectors, chains, and bicycles equipped with these connectors. They should contact their SRAM retailer for a free replacement PowerLock connector link. For more information, consumers can contact SRAM at (800) 346-2928 or visit www.sram.com.
