Plain-English summary
The Stanley Works is recalling approximately 78,000 units of the Stanley® Stud Sensor 200 and Stanley® FatMax® Stud Sensor 400. The recalled products include model numbers 77-720 and 77-730. These sensors are made of black plastic with a wide yellow stripe down the center and have "Stanley" or "FatMax" printed on the front. Affected sensors have date codes printed on the inside of the battery cover that do not begin with the letter "R."
The recall was issued because the stud sensors can fail to calibrate properly and detect AC electrical wires behind the wall. This failure poses a shock hazard to the user. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.
The affected sensors were sold at home improvement and hardware stores nationwide from November 2007 through January 2009 for between $20 and $30. Consumers should contact Stanley to determine if their stud sensor is included in the recall and to receive a free replacement sensor. For additional information, consumers can contact Stanley toll-free at (866) 215-1132 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, visit the firm's website at www.stanleytools.com, or e-mail Stanley at [email protected].
