Evenflo Recalls Majestic High Chairs Due to Fall and Choking Hazards

Evenflo is recalling about 95,000 Majestic high chairs because loose plastic caps and metal screws can cause the seatback to fall or detach, posing fall and choking risks to children.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a high chair that has resulted in reported injuries, including broken bones and head injuries, which aligns with the rubric criteria for significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Evenflo Company Inc. is recalling approximately 95,000 Majestic high chairs due to a defect where plastic caps and metal screws on the sides of the chair can loosen and fall out. This failure can cause the seatback to suddenly recline, fall back, or detach from the chair, creating a risk of children falling out or colliding with objects. Additionally, the detached plastic caps and metal screws present a choking hazard if they are placed in a child's mouth.

The recall includes high chairs made before January 23, 2007, with specific model numbers listed on a white label on the seatback. These chairs were sold at juvenile product and mass merchandise stores nationwide, including Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, and Shopko, as well as online at walmart.com, from January 2006 through May 2007 for between $80 and $110. Evenflo has received 140 reports of seatbacks reclining, falling back, or detaching unexpectedly, resulting in at least 47 reports of bumps and bruises to the head, two reports of broken bones, and at least 45 reports of other injuries including abrasions, cuts, and bruises. The company has also received more than 1,000 reports of plastic caps and screws falling out, including seven incidents where parts were found in children's hands or mouths but were removed before choking occurred.

Consumers should immediately stop using the affected high chairs and contact Evenflo to receive a free repair kit. For additional information, consumers can contact Evenflo at (800) 233-5921 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.majestichighchair.com.
