The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling approximately 43,500 Next Step plastic sippy/tumbler cups due to a laceration hazard. The 7-ounce cups feature an aqua blue cap and yellow rubber-like material on the handles and bottom. The cups were distributed as promotional giveaways by Mead Johnson Nutritionals to physicians and consumers nationwide via direct mail between September 2006 and October 2006.
The hazard exists because the cups can break into pieces or have handles break off when dropped or banged, creating sharp or jagged edges. Artcraft and Foremost Inc. has received 90 reports of the cups breaking, resulting in six reports of minor injuries, including cuts to fingers and thumbs.
