What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a choking hazard for young children with one reported incident of a child choking, but no injuries have been reported, fitting the criteria for a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Payless ShoeSource, Inc. is recalling approximately 690,000 pairs of Children's Airwalk® Compel clog shoes. The recall involves prewalk sizes 3 through toddler size 10. These flexible shoes feature air ventilation holes on the top and side, as well as plastic rivets with the Airwalk® logo attached to the strap. The Airwalk® logo and shoe size are printed on the sole. No other sizes, styles, or models are included in this recall.
The plastic rivets used to attach the strap to the shoe can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. Payless has received one report of a child who began to choke on a detached rivet, though no injuries have been reported.
The shoes were sold at Big Lots stores nationwide from January 2007 through March 2007 for about $115 and $130. Consumers should take the shoes away from young children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund or exchange. For additional information, consumers can call Payless at (800) 654-0697 or visit www.payless.com.
