ITT Recalls Faulty Fire Suppression Pumps for Mechanical Defect

ITT Water Technology is recalling about 18,300 Goulds, Bell & Gossett, and Red Jacket pumps because a mechanical part was not fully tightened, which can cause the pump to fail during use.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fire suppression pump failure) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

ITT Water Technology Inc. is recalling approximately 18,300 Goulds Pumps, Bell & Gossett, and Red Jacket Water Products brand pumps used in fire suppression systems. The recall involves models NPE, NPO, MCC, MCS, SM, and Series 3530 manufactured between December 2005 and July 26, 2006. These pumps can be identified by date codes M05, A06, B06, C06, D06, E06, F06, or G06, which are the first three digits of the serial number on the nameplate.

The recall is due to a mechanical part that was not fully tightened, which can lead to the pump failing during use. If these pumps are part of a fire suppression system and fail, the risk of fire damage increases. The pump itself does not pose a fire hazard. ITT Water Technology has received one report of a pump failing to start during a system test, but no injuries have been reported.

The pumps were sold through pump distributors nationwide from December 2005 through July 2006 for about $800. Installers of fire suppression systems will be contacted by ITT Water Technology to schedule an inspection and replacement. Consumers who have not been contacted should call ITT Water Technology Inc. at (800) 984-9199 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.goulds.com or www.bellgossett.com.
