The hazard exists because the magnesium faceplate on the stem, which holds the handlebar in place, can crack. If the faceplate cracks, the handlebar can break off the bicycle, creating a serious fall hazard for the rider. Specialized has received five reports of the faceplate exhibiting cracks, but no injuries have been reported.

Consumers should stop riding the affected bicycles immediately. They should take the bicycles to an authorized Specialized retailer to receive a free replacement faceplate. The stems were sold as original equipment or as an aftermarket item for about $160 from June 2005 through April 2006.
