The adapters are black and gold, L-shaped devices made of brass and plastic. Only L-shaped adapters are affected; straight adapters and those for rechargeable battery models are not included in this recall.

The hazard exists because the L-shaped adapters can leak or break apart during use. This failure can strike and injure nearby persons or release pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2), which can freeze exposed skin. American Biophysics has received 11 reports of persons struck by broken adapters and three reports of minor skin irritations caused by the CO2 gas.

The adapters were sold as accessories with Mosquito Magnet® insect trap products manufactured from October 2002 through November 2003. They were distributed through home centers, hardware stores, industrial suppliers, and online retailers nationwide. Consumers should stop using the recalled L-shaped adapters immediately and contact American Biophysics Corp. to receive a free replacement adapter.
