Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a choking hazard with a reported incident where a child required hospital emergency room treatment to remove a swallowed piece, meeting the criteria for significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Maxim Enterprise Inc. is recalling approximately 12,000 Little Tree Mini Learning Cubes sold at Target stores nationwide from June 2005 through November 2005. The recalled toy is an 8-inch square wooden box featuring various activities on each side, including an abacus, blocks, shapes, and a blackboard, with a wooden cover containing a spiral bead maze.

The recall is being issued because small wooden pegs in the top corners of the toy can come loose, creating a choking hazard for young children. Target has received three reports of incidents involving the toy. In one incident, an 18-month-old girl swallowed a loose piece that became stuck, requiring removal in a hospital emergency room. In a second incident, a child began choking after putting two wooden pegs in her mouth. A third incident involved pegs popping out, with no injury reported.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled learning cube away from young children. The toy can be returned to Target for a $15 gift card plus applicable state tax. For additional information, consumers can contact Target at (800) 440-0680 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit www.target.com.
