Plain-English summary
Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Inc. is recalling approximately 470,000 Kidde 10 lb. industrial dry chemical fire extinguishers manufactured between 1991 and 2000. The affected units feature black plastic Zytel® nylon valves in steel cylinders. These extinguishers were sold nationwide through commercial fire equipment distributors and stores and were primarily used in factories, plants, businesses, and other commercial locations, though some are in residential settings. The recall does not apply to Kidde's smaller 2 1/2 and 5 lb. residential fire extinguishers.
The recall is being issued because the nylon valves on these extinguishers can separate from the steel cylinder during the 6-year recharge service or shortly afterwards. This separation creates a safety hazard to fire extinguisher service personnel and consumers. Kidde has received five reports of valve separation, which resulted in three reported injuries.
Fire Extinguisher Distributors and Service Organizations must immediately stop servicing all units covered under this alert and participate in Kidde's Fire Extinguisher Replacement Program. Only professional distributors and service organizations should remove the affected units. Consumers who suspect they possess one of these industrial units should not remove the unit themselves but should contact Kidde at (800) 631-7377 between 8 AM and 5 PM ET Monday through Friday. Units should not be returned to the place of purchase.
