Lithonia Lighting Recalls Indoor HID Fixtures with Cracking Acrylic Lenses
Lithonia Lighting is recalling about 93,200 indoor HID light fixtures because leaking fluid can cause acrylic lenses to crack and fall, posing an injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (one laceration), but no deaths or serious injuries are documented, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for products with reported injury but not meeting the threshold for 'Severe' or 'Critical'.
Plain-English summary
Lithonia Lighting of Conyers, Ga., is recalling approximately 93,200 indoor High Intensity Discharge (HID) light fixtures with acrylic lenses and/or reflectors. The recall includes specific models and wattages manufactured in Crawfordsville, Ind., between April 2002 and October 2003. These fixtures were sold through lighting and electrical supply distributors nationwide from April 2002 through February 2004 and are generally used in retail spaces, light manufacturing areas, warehouses, and gymnasiums.
The hazard exists because a component in the light fixture can leak fluid, which degrades the acrylic lenses and reflectors, causing them to crack and fall. Lithonia has received reports of approximately 330 fixtures with cracked acrylic parts, including about 50 instances where pieces fell from fixtures. One person suffered a laceration on the forehead when a piece of acrylic lens fell and struck him.
Building owners and managers with recalled fixtures should contact Lithonia to verify if their fixtures are included in the recall and to arrange for a replacement of the fixture or faulty component. Lithonia and their distributors are directly notifying customers who purchased the recalled fixtures. Consumers can also call Lithonia Lighting toll-free at (866) 345-1194 or visit their website for more information.
