Fisher-Price Recalls Lightning PAC Scooters and MX3 Mini Bikes

Fisher-Price is recalling about 34,000 ride-on toys because over-inflated tires can rupture, posing a risk of facial and hand injuries.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where specific injuries (facial and hand) have been reported, but no fatalities or severe injuries requiring hospitalization are mentioned, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for reported injuries without critical outcomes.

Plain-English summary

Fisher-Price, of East Aurora, N.Y., is recalling approximately 29,000 Power Wheels Lightning PAC Scooters and 5,000 Power Wheels MX3 Mini Bikes. These battery-powered ride-on toys, designed for children ages six and older, were sold at discount department and toy stores nationwide from November 2001 through April 2003 for about $250 for scooters and $200 for mini bikes.

The recall is due to a hazard where the plastic rim within the wheel can break if the tires are over-inflated, causing the tire to rupture. This poses a risk of facial and hand injuries to children and adults while inflating the tire. Fisher-Price has received six reports of incidents, including two reports of facial injuries and two reports of hand injuries.

Recalled scooters have model number 73530 and mini bikes have model number 73535, located inside the battery compartment. Consumers should check the warning label near the inflation valves; if it reads "Never inflate above 30 psi," the product is not subject to this recall. Affected units had labels that did not warn against inflating higher than 30 psi. Consumers should take the recalled products away from children immediately and contact Fisher-Price to receive new warning labels and a free tire gauge.
