Bowflex Fitness Machines Recalled for Seat Pin and Bracket Failure
The Nautilus Group recalled Bowflex Power Pro and Ultimate fitness machines because seat pins or brackets can break, causing sudden movement and fall risks.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (serious injuries requiring stitches), but no fatalities or FDA Class I/USDA Class I classification is present, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products with reported injury.
Plain-English summary
The Nautilus Group is recalling Bowflex Power Pro and Bowflex Ultimate fitness machines built before September 1, 2002. The recall involves 680,000 Power Pro units and 102,000 Ultimate units. These machines were sold nationwide through specialty fitness stores, infomercials, and direct sales from January 1995 through April 2004 for between $1,200 and $1,600.
The recall is due to a hazard where the seat pin on certain models can break or become disengaged, allowing the seat to move suddenly. Additionally, the incline support bracket on other models can break, allowing the incline bench to move suddenly. Both conditions pose a fall risk to the user. Nautilus received 46 reports of seat pin failure, including two serious injuries requiring stitches to the head, and 42 reports of incline support bracket failure, including injuries to the back, neck, and head.
The Nautilus Group is no longer in business, and the original recall remedy is no longer available. Consumers should discard this product and not donate or resell it. For more information, consumers should call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054).
