John Deere Recalls 300 Compact Utility Tractors Due to Bolt Failure
John Deere is recalling 300 compact utility tractors because steel bolts securing the roll-over protective structure can shear off, reducing safety.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the roll-over protective structure that could fail during a roll-over incident, posing a risk of serious harm, although no injuries have been reported.
Plain-English summary
John Deere is recalling approximately 300 compact utility tractors sold in the United States. The recall involves specific models, including the 4210, 4310, and 4410 CUT series, manufactured with hydrostatic or PowrReverser transmissions. These vehicles were sold through authorized John Deere dealers nationwide between January and February 2004 for prices ranging from $18,000 to $21,500.
The recall is necessary because some of the steel bolts used to secure the Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) to the tractor's rear axle can shear off. This failure decreases the strength of the ROPS and its ability to protect the operator in the event of a roll-over incident. John Deere is aware of three incidents where the bolts sheared off, all of which were discovered during factory inspections. There have been no reported injuries.
Consumers should stop using their tractors immediately and contact a John Deere dealer for a free repair. The company is directly notifying purchasers. For more information, consumers can contact John Deere's Customer Communications Center at (800) 537-8233 or visit www.johndeere.com.
