Notifier Recalls Fire Alarm Control Panels Due to Sleep Mode Hazard

Notifier is recalling approximately 6,000 fire alarm control panels because a component may enter a sleep mode, preventing audible evacuation signals from operating during an emergency.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire safety device that may fail to provide audible warnings during an emergency, representing a risk of harm where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Notifier, of Northford, Conn., is recalling approximately 6,000 fire alarm control panels, specifically the central processing unit (CPU-2020 and CPU-2) and Display Interface Assembly (DIA-2020 and DIA-2) components of model AM2020 and AFP1010 panels. The affected units have date codes from 0100 to 2003 and firmware version 3.0 or 3.01. These date codes appear on the back outer edge of the PC boards.

The recall is being issued because the Audio Evacuation Unit (AEU) can enter a "sleep" mode where it does not communicate with the system. When this occurs, audible evacuation signals associated with the failed AEU will not operate, meaning building occupants may not be warned of an emergency. Notifier has received eight reports of trouble signals alarming, but the problem was identified and corrected in each case. No injuries have been reported.

The affected components were sold through Notifier distributors nationwide from January 2000 through May 2002. The list price for the CPU and DIA combination for the model AM2020 is about $6,400, and for the model AFP1010 is about $3,370. Distributors should contact their Notifier customer service representative at (800) 289-3473 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, to receive an upgraded CPU firmware set for each affected panel at no charge.
