Plain-English summary
Vaxcel International Co. Ltd. is recalling approximately 1,200 dual-motor, 36-inch Aire Tek ceiling fans. The recall was initiated because about 80 of these units were improperly assembled with a metal sleeve that could cause exposed wiring. This defect creates an increased risk of electrical shock for consumers during the installation or removal of the fan.
The recalled fans were sold in chrome, stone white, brush nickel, polished brass, antique brass, or weathered patina finishes. The model number 355-6645 is printed on a label located on the central housing of the fan, while the brand name "Aire Tek" appears only on the packaging. These units were sold at independent retail lighting stores nationwide between January 2002 and May 2002 for prices ranging from $350 to $450.
No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall. Consumers should contact Vaxcel to determine if their unit is defective. A free replacement ceiling fan will be provided to consumers with defective units. To avoid the risk of shock while removing a recalled fan, consumers are encouraged to use a professional electrician. Vaxcel will reimburse consumers up to $75 for charges incurred in removing the recalled fans.
