Plain-English summary
Cadet Manufacturing Co. is recalling approximately 19,000 RM and ZM model in-wall electric heaters. These units were distributed mainly in California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington between 1998 and 2001. The recall includes heaters sold through various channels and those provided as replacements for previously recalled ZA and RA models.
The hazard exists when an RM or ZM model heatbox is inserted into a ZAC wall can and wired through a fitting in the top-left wall can knock-out. In this specific configuration, the heater may operate continuously regardless of thermostat settings or room temperature. This continuous operation can cause the heater to overheat and ignite nearby combustible materials. No injuries or fires have been reported in connection with this recall.
Consumers should stop using the heater immediately by turning it off at the electrical panel board. Affected consumers should contact Cadet to schedule a free repair. This recall program began in July 2001 and is distinct from the closure of the February 2000 recall program.
