Square D and Nelco TW Electric In-Wall Heaters Recalled for Fire Risk

Square D and Nelco are recalling approximately 80,000 electric in-wall heaters sold between 1970 and 1986 because a deteriorating rubber grommet can cause the fan to stop, leading to overheating and potential fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with reported property damage (14 claims), which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' and 'structural vehicle defect' (analogous to structural product defect) or significant property damage.

Plain-English summary

Square D Company, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is voluntarily recalling approximately 80,000 electric in-wall heaters. The recall involves "TW" heaters sold between 1970 and 1986 under the Square D and Nelco Corporation brand names. Specific model numbers include TW 2422, TW 2022, and TW 1222, Series A or B.

A rubber grommet that holds the heater's fan in place may deteriorate over time, causing the fan to stop blowing. If the fan stops, the heater coils can overheat, potentially causing burning or scorching of the wall or nearby house furnishings. Square D has received about 50 complaints or claims of overheating, including fourteen claims of property damage, though the involvement of the heaters in these incidents has not been confirmed.

To identify affected units, consumers must remove the grill of the in-wall heater and look for the identification label located on the left side of the heater just below the blower wheel. Consumers should immediately turn off the power to the affected heaters and stop using them until they are replaced. A major heater manufacturer has agreed to provide replacement heaters for a 50 percent discount off the retail list price. To obtain this discount, consumers must remove the model identification labels from the recalled heaters and turn them in at the time of purchase. For more information and to find the nearest participating distributor, consumers can call (877) 202-9046 between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
